How to Prepare Class 11 Chemistry?

Whether you are going to appear in the Board exams, NEET or JEE Main, strong command over Class 11 Chemistry is vital for getting good marks and rank. While reading organic Chemistry in Class 12 you will surely understand the importance of Class 11 Chemistry. But don’t wait for so long or it would be too late. In this Class you become familiar with the basic concepts of organic Chemistry and if you fail to grasp those then you will face difficulty in the organic Chemistry of Class 12.

In different competitive exams like NEET, JEE Main, JEE Advanced etc almost half of the total questions are asked from Class 11 Chemistry. Some chapters like Structure of Atom”, “Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure”, “Thermodynamics”, “Equilibrium and Organic Chemistry are very important for the competitive exams. If you want to secure a berth for yourself in the prestigious Medical or Engineering Colleges of the country then you must study Class 11 Chemistry well. Let us see how to prepare Class 11 Chemistry.

List of some of the recommended reference books and sample papers have been given below. These books will help you in better preparation of Chemistry. On selecting below mentioned links, you will be taken to Amazon website from where you can purchase desired books at special discounts.
  1.  Oswaal CBSE Question Bank
  2.  Arihant Master the NCERT  (For MCQs entirely based on NCERT)
  3. Together with Chemistry
Class 11 Chemistry can be divided into three branches i.e. Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Many students think that in Physical Chemistry they need to solve only numericals. If you also have the same thought regarding this branch of Chemistry then like all, you are also partially wrong. Yes, you need to solve numericals in Physical Chemistry but at the same time you must not neglect the theory portions which are very important for both your final exam and different competitive exams.

Majority of numericals are asked from chapters like Structure of Atom, States of Matter, Thermodynamics and Equilibrium. Prepare these chapters well. Try to solve at least 10 numericals daily. It will make you more and more confident. “Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure” is also a very important chapter. You will hardly find any numerical in this chapter but go through this lesson repeatedly. It is one of the easiest but highly scoring chapters of Class 11 Chemistry.

In order to prepare Inorganic Chemistry you just need a very sharp memory because it involves lots of learning. How many of you have learned any chapter from Inorganic Chemistry and have forgotten it after few days? If I am not wrong then majority of you are facing the same problem. Don’t get disheartened and take out at least an hour from your busy schedule to read Inorganic Chemistry daily. Though in Class 11 you are required to learn only a little portion of Inorganic Chemistry, never leave them for the last moment. If possible prepare notes which will help you tremendously during final preparation.

I am once again mentioning that the Organic Chemistry of Class 11 is the foundation that you desperately need to secure good marks in both Class 12 Board Exams and in the competitive exams. If you will not study Physical and Inorganic Chemistry of Class 11  then you may face little problem in the higher Classes but if you fail to study Class 11 Organic Chemistry in proper manner then you will encounter lots of problems in the Class 12. It is one of the easiest branch of Chemistry if read properly or it can become the toughest branch if not read in correct manner.

Some of the important topics of Class 11 Organic Chemistry are Nomenclature of Organic Compounds, Isomerism, Inductive Effect, Resonance, Hyperconjugation, Quantitative Analysis (Dumas Method and Kjeldahl’s Method), Preparation of Alkanes, Alkenes & Alkynes, Conformations, Markovnikov and Anti Markovnikov rule, Ozonolysis, Oxidation of Alkenes and Chemical Properties of Benzene.

Go through NCERT first before reading any other reference books. Practice each and every question of this book given in the Exercise. In Medical and Engineering Exams like NEET and JEE Main respectively which are conducted by NTA majority of questions are asked from NCERT hence never neglect this book.

    1. For AIIMS, you should start preparing now. Focus on all three subjects equally. In Physics and Chemistry, don't neglect theory as it is vital in Assertion and Reason. Nothing is impossible in front of hard work.
