MCI restored all Medical Seats in West Bengal

Last month Medical Council of India (MCI) took a very harsh decision and reduced Medical seats in West Bengal to half. Approx 50 percent MBBS seats reduction in the state shocked everybody. It gave severe headache to thousands of Medical aspirants who cracked West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (Medical) this year but were not sure whether they will get admission in a Medical College or not. In WBJEE 2014 out of 63,330 candidates, only 4,433 qualified for the Medical counselling. But after the decision of MCI only 1200 Medical seats were available in the state.

During its recent investigation MCI found that many government and private Medical Colleges of West Bengal were lacking good infrastructure and faculties. Hence MCI decided to slash Medical seats in West Bengal to half. MCI has reduced MBBS seats this year in several Medical colleges of different states due to poor infrastructure and lack of other essential facilities. Four government Medical Colleges of Bengal were banned by the Medical Council of India from taking admission into the MBBS courses during the academic session 2014-15.

After the interference of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in this matter the entire scenario has changed dramatically. She wrote to Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan and asked him to interfere in this matter. After receiving an undertaking from the West Bengal government MCI has restored all Medical seats in the West Bengal that were earlier slashed by them. State government has promised that they will improve the infrastructure of state-run Medical colleges and will improve the facilities in the next one year.

MCI had restored 400 MBBS seats in the last month itself. On 12 July 2014, 200 Medical seats were restored while rest Medical seats in West Bengal will be restored by the end of this week. 100 Medical seats have been increased in NRS Medical College while 95 seats have been increased in Calcutta Medical College. 50 MBBS seats have been increased in SSKM and RG Kar Medical College each. MCI has restored 1045 Medical seats in West Bengal and it will surely help thousands of bright students who have cracked WBJEE (Medical) this year.
